Data lineage
Data lineage is the map of how data flows: from source systems, through transformations, into the tables, dashboards and models people rely on.
What lineage answers
- Where did this number come from? Trace a metric back to its source.
- What breaks if I change this? See downstream dependencies before a change.
- Can we prove provenance? Show auditors or collaborators how data was produced.
Lineage can be captured at table level or column level, and is increasingly collected automatically from query logs and transformation code. The OpenLineage project defines an open standard for lineage metadata.
