Data catalogs
A data catalog is a searchable inventory of data assets: tables, files, dashboards and models, with what they mean, who owns them and how they are used.
Why catalogs matter
Without a catalog, people ask around, guess, or rebuild datasets that already exist. A catalog makes data findable, the first of the FAIR principles, and gives context that builds trust: definitions, owners, freshness, quality checks and lineage.
Public catalogs work the same way: open-data portals list datasets with standard metadata, often using the W3C DCAT vocabulary.
