Data stewardship
A data steward is responsible for the day-to-day care of a dataset: keeping its definitions, documentation and quality in order, and helping people use it correctly.
Owner, steward, custodian
- Data owner
- Accountable for a dataset and decides who may use it.
- Data steward
- Maintains meaning, quality and documentation; answers questions.
- Data custodian
- Runs the technical systems that store and move the data.
In open communities, stewardship is often shared among maintainers who review contributions, similar to maintainers of an open-source project.
