Architecture
Data mesh
Data mesh, introduced by Zhamak Dehghani in 2019, is a socio-technical approach that moves responsibility for analytical data to the domain teams that know it best.
Four principles
Domain ownership
Teams closest to the data own and serve it, rather than a single central team.
Data as a product
Datasets are treated as products with users, documentation and quality guarantees. See data products.
Self-serve platform
A shared platform makes it easy for domains to build, publish and run data products.
Federated governance
Global standards are agreed together and applied automatically, while domains keep autonomy.
Why it is a collaboration model
Data mesh is as much about people as technology: many teams publishing and consuming each other’s data under shared rules. That makes discoverability, documentation and contracts essential.
