Metadata and documentation
Metadata is “data about data”: who made it, when, how, what each field means, and under what terms it can be used. It is what turns a file into something other people can reuse.
Kinds of metadata
Descriptive
Title, summary, keywords, creator: helps people find the data.
Structural
Schema, field types, relationships: helps tools read it.
Administrative
Licence, access rules, provenance, retention: helps people use it correctly.
Practical documentation
- A README that explains purpose, collection method, known gaps and how to cite.
- A data dictionary describing every column and its units.
- A changelog recording what changed between versions.
- Machine-readable metadata, for example a Frictionless
datapackage.jsonor DCAT record.
