Collaboration
Version control for data
Version control lets teams see exactly how data changed, who changed it and why, and return to any earlier state, just as software teams do with Git.
Why it matters
- Reproducibility: re-run an analysis on the exact data it used.
- Review: propose changes on a branch and merge after review.
- Safety: roll back mistakes instead of restoring from backups.
- Credit: keep a record of contributors.
Approaches range from storing small datasets in Git, to tools that version large files alongside code, to table formats with “time travel” and branching built in.
