Open data
Open government data
Open government data is data produced or commissioned by public bodies and published for anyone to reuse. It supports transparency, research, public services and new businesses.
Principles and frameworks
The International Open Data Charter (2015) asks that government data be open by default, timely and comprehensive, accessible and usable, comparable and interoperable, and published for improved governance and citizen engagement, and for inclusive development and innovation.
In the EU, the Open Data Directive (Directive (EU) 2019/1024) governs reuse of public-sector information and introduced “high-value datasets” that must be available free of charge.
