Dataset citation and DOIs
Citing data the way we cite papers gives creators credit and lets others find the exact data used. Persistent identifiers such as DOIs make that possible.
The basics
A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a persistent identifier that keeps resolving even if a dataset moves. For research data, DOIs are commonly issued through DataCite. The Joint Declaration of Data Citation Principles (FORCE11, 2014) sets out why and how data should be cited.
A good citation includes creator, year, title, version, publisher or repository, and identifier. Citing a specific version supports reproducibility.
