Privacy and the GDPR
Open and collaborative data must still respect privacy. The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), in force since 25 May 2018, is the best-known framework, and many other jurisdictions have similar laws.
GDPR principles (Article 5)
Lawfulness, fairness, transparency
Have a legal basis and tell people what you do.
Purpose limitation
Collect for specified purposes; don’t reuse incompatibly.
Data minimisation
Only what is necessary.
Accuracy
Keep it correct and up to date.
Storage limitation
Don’t keep it longer than needed.
Integrity & confidentiality
Protect it with appropriate security. Plus accountability: be able to show compliance.
What this means for sharing
Personal data should not be published openly. Options include sharing aggregates, anonymising data properly, using controlled access, or analysing data in place with clean rooms. This is general information, not legal advice.
