Semantic layers and shared metrics
A semantic layer sits between raw tables and the people using them, defining metrics, dimensions and joins once so everyone gets the same answer.
The problem it solves
When every dashboard defines “active customer” slightly differently, meetings turn into arguments about numbers. A semantic layer centralises those definitions, documents them, and exposes them to BI tools, notebooks and APIs.
For collaboration, shared definitions are as important as shared data: they let different teams build on each other’s work without re-deriving logic.
