APIs for data access
An API gives software direct access to data, so applications and analyses always use the current version rather than a stale download.
Common styles
- REST: resources at URLs, typically returning JSON; easy to start with.
- GraphQL: clients request exactly the fields they need.
- SQL endpoints: query tables directly over a standard protocol.
- Bulk export: files for large or offline use.
Good data APIs
- Clear documentation and examples.
- Stable, versioned interfaces.
- Pagination, filtering and rate limits stated up front.
- Authentication that fits the sensitivity of the data.
- Open specifications (for example OpenAPI) so tools can generate clients.
