Sharing
Data sharing: models and good practice
Data sharing ranges from publishing an open file to granting a partner live, governed access to selected tables. The right model depends on sensitivity, cost and how fresh the data needs to be.
Common sharing models
| Model | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Open publication | Downloadable files or APIs under an open licence | Public-interest and research data |
| Controlled access | Users apply and are approved before access | Sensitive research data |
| File exchange | Periodic extracts sent to a partner | Simple, low-frequency needs |
| Live / zero-copy share | Partner queries governed tables in place | Fresh data without copies |
| API | Programmatic access to specific records | Applications and integrations |
| Clean room | Joint analysis without revealing raw records | Privacy-sensitive collaboration |
Good practice
- Share the smallest dataset that meets the purpose.
- Document meaning, quality and limitations alongside the data.
- Put terms in writing: a licence for open data, an agreement for restricted data.
- Prefer live, revocable access over uncontrolled copies.
- Log access, and review it regularly.
