Architecture
Warehouse, lake or lakehouse?
Warehouses, lakes and lakehouses are three common ways to store analytical data. Each makes different trade-offs between structure, flexibility and cost.
| Architecture | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Data warehouse | Structured, fast SQL, strong governance | Less suited to raw or unstructured data |
| Data lake | Cheap storage for any format, flexible | Can become a “data swamp” without catalog and governance |
| Lakehouse | Open table formats on lake storage with warehouse features | Newer; tooling still evolving |
Open table formats include Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake and Apache Hudi.
The collaboration angle
Open table formats let several engines read and write the same data, which reduces copies and makes sharing across teams and tools easier.
